The Cheap Hotel Waikiki Route – Sometimes a Necessity

On previous posts we have tried to cover the higher priced hotels and resorts in Waikiki, but now, we are going to change tack, and consider going the cheap hotel Waikiki route. Why would we think about doing this?
Well, the reality is, that for many of us, to even entertain going on a holiday to Waikiki, means we’ve got to sit down and calculate whether or not we have the finances available for such a trip. We probably haven’t got a spare 10k to throw at a holiday in our present circumstances. Even though we would prefer to stay in the higher priced resorts and hotels in the Waikiki area, we just can’t afford to.
However, we may be able to afford that Waikiki vacation, if – we are willing to spend our holiday in a clean, affordable, or dare I say, cheap hotel in Waikiki. But of course, we must be aware that we may get what we pay for.
Some reason this way – if they are going on a holiday to Waikiki Hawaii, they’re going to enjoy it to the hilt, even if it means paying, and therefore, saving longer for the holiday of a lifetime. Do you think this way? It’s okay, I might be guilty of this thinking myself.
However, others think differently, don’t they – their line of thinking is that – ‘I want to travel and holiday in Waikiki as soon as I can. I don’t mind doing it on the cheap, as I do not expect the world, and am willing to put up with, shall we say, mediocre accommodation and if I wait for the up market holiday, I might be dead by then’.
Some too, may reason that they to plan to spend all day sight seeing and doing day trips etc, so, they will only be using their room for sleeping, more or less, so they won’t be there often, and in this case, they wouldn’t mind putting up with a cheaper hotel so that they, in the long run, can save money on their accommodation.
In fact, after reading some of the reviews of hotels and resorts rated in the 5 star category, you may well conclude that going the cheap hotel Waikiki route is satisfactory.
One thing seems to be clear though, and that is, if you decide on a Waikiki hotel on Waikiki beach, it’s is going to cost you. So, deciding on a cheap hotel in Waikkii Hawaii, is going to put you a little away from the beach, but maybe not too far. So, if you don’t mind being a short distance from the beach, a cheap hotel in Waikiki will suit you.

Doesn’t look too bad, and it is right in the thick of things in Waikiki central.
What else do we know about this Hotel? Checking the rate for myself and wife for a 4 day stay worked out to be $195 per night on the higher floors? Maybe not so cheap? But cheaper than the beach front hotels and resorts I think.
Reviews for the “Ilima Hotel Waikiki”
You’re probably getting tired of the reviews, but I find them quite entertaining. Must be something wrong with me, do you think?
Based on Trip advisor reviews, this Ilima Hotel” ref=”nofollow”>cheap hotel Waikiki was spoken of in glowing tones by 90% (approx.) of reviewers. They said things like -
“Outstanding value for money, very convenient location, Great buy and great stay, Roomy, Lovely staff, Friendliest hotel I’ve stayed in, Better than we expected, Clean Suite, Totally recommend staying here, Loved it, Oldie but goodie, Home away from home, Best hotel and best price, Surprise bargain, A little gem of a hotel, highly recommended”
And – wait for it – the other 10% weren’t as happy – They said -
“Cockroach spotted, Horrible smelly outdated unprofessional and low class, disappointed, bad service, we hated it, vacation in paradise ruined, ok for one night, affordable but dumpy, unfriendly staff, not as expected, deluxe not so deluxe, far from being great value”
Best Suggested Rooms for the Ilima Hotel Waikiki
“Above the 5th floor for views, Rooms facing the mountain were suggested, Upgrade to a suite on the higher floors was hinted at, and a Mauka room overlooking canal is quieter”.
“Island Colony hotel Waikiki” – Another cheap hotel Waikiki

There is another one that you may consider. It’s called Island Colony Hotel Waikiki. It is noted as being the tallest hotel in Waikiki, some forty four storys high. Recent pricing for this high rise in the back blocks of Waikiki, was $95 per night for a 4 night stay. Not to bad.
Reviews of “Island Colony hotel Waikiki”
Trip Advisor’s ratio of pros verses the cons respecting this cheap hotel Waikiki, was a little swayed toward the cons, with a 70% / 30%. That is 70% positive reviews, with 30% negative.
The positive people said the following things -
“Perfect for what we were looking for, Friendly staff, Thoroughly recommend, Everything you need, Always a great stay, Amazing service and value, Location and view is unbeatable, Made my stay a 5 star experience, Do not believe the negative reviews, No Complaints, Very nice hotel, Quite simply superb”
Those for the negative aspects said things like -
“Dirty, Yuck, Never go here, Infested with bed bugs, Cockroach colony, Complete disappointment, Needs updating, Good rate but not good value, A disaster, Pictures always look better than the real thing, Only bedroom was air conditioned, Don’t expect the Ritz, Cheap but very noisy”
So, what do you think? The above Hotels, the Ilima Hotel and the Island Colony Hotel Waikiki, are just two of the cheap hotels in Waikiki. There are other cheap hotel rooms in Waikiki for sale, it’s just a matter of searching for them on the web or asking through your local, or an Hawaiian travel agent.
